Sell Your Van Cleef & Arpels

Poetry in precious stones — Van Cleef’s extraordinary craftsmanship commands extraordinary auction results.

The Art of Van Cleef & Arpels

When Alfred Van Cleef and his father-in-law Salomon Arpels opened their first boutique on Place Vendôme in 1906, they brought a poetic sensibility to high jewelry that remains unmatched. The house invented the Mystery Setting (Serti Mystérieux) in 1933 — a technique so revolutionary that, nearly a century later, no other jeweler has replicated it with the same precision. This single innovation tells you everything about what makes Van Cleef special: relentless technical perfection in service of beauty.

Van Cleef & Arpels occupies a unique position at auction. The Alhambra collection (introduced in 1968) has become one of the most successful jewelry lines in history, creating a broad secondary market of collectors who trade up through the range. Meanwhile, the house’s high jewelry — ballerinas, fairy clips, Zip necklaces, and Mystery-Set pieces — attracts the most sophisticated jewelry collectors and regularly achieves six- and seven-figure results.

The brand’s connection to fairy tales, nature, and couture (the Zip necklace was inspired by a suggestion from the Duchess of Windsor) gives each piece a narrative dimension that resonates with collectors. Van Cleef doesn’t just sell jewelry; it sells stories — and those stories translate into premium auction results.

What Makes Your Van Cleef Valuable at Auction

Mystery Setting (Serti Mystérieux)

Mystery-Set pieces — where gemstones are set without visible prongs, creating an unbroken surface of color — are the holy grail for Van Cleef collectors. These technically extraordinary pieces command the highest premiums at auction and are extremely difficult to replicate or repair.

Iconic Collections

The Alhambra (particularly vintage gold and stone combinations no longer in production), the Zip necklace, the Ballerina clips, and the Frivole collection all carry strong secondary market demand. Discontinued color and material combinations in Alhambra are especially sought after.

High Jewelry & Provenance

Van Cleef’s haute joaillerie pieces are one-of-a-kind creations that represent the pinnacle of the house’s artistry. Combined with documented provenance, these pieces can achieve results many multiples of their material value.

FORTUNA’s Van Cleef & Arpels Expertise

Selling a Van Cleef piece at the right price takes more than an auction slot. Here’s what our specialists do for every consignment.

Authentication & Verification

Every Van Cleef piece is reviewed against reference archives and, where applicable, movement/maker marks, hallmarks, and signatures — giving bidders the confidence that commands top prices.

Market Intelligence

We track the Van Cleef piece market in real time — recent auction results, collector appetite, reference premiums — so your reserve and estimate are informed by current data, not stale comps.

Value Enhancement

Precise cataloging, professional photography, and targeted marketing to the right buyers are what separate a solid result from a record-setting one.

What Collectors Look For in Your Van Cleef & Arpels

Van Cleef’s collector community is knowledgeable and detail-oriented. Here’s what influences value:

Authentication: Van Cleef serial numbers, French hallmarks, and the house’s distinctive signature style are essential identification points. The brand also offers certificates of authenticity that significantly enhance resale value.

Alhambra Specifics: Size (Sweet, Vintage, Magic, Lucky), material (gold type, stone type), number of motifs, and whether it’s a current or discontinued combination all drive pricing in the active Alhambra secondary market.

Stone Condition: For Mystery-Set pieces, the condition and completeness of every stone is critical. Missing or replaced stones diminish value significantly, and repairs to Mystery Settings are extraordinarily costly.

Original Packaging: Van Cleef’s signature green packaging, certificates, and service documentation add measurable value. The certificate of authenticity from the house is particularly important for confirming period and specifications.

Discontinued Materials: Van Cleef regularly retires specific stone and metal combinations in the Alhambra line. White gold with letterwood, yellow gold with lapis — these discontinued variations develop scarcity premiums over time.

High Jewelry One-Offs: If your Van Cleef piece is from a high jewelry collection or is a unique commission, the absence of comparable market data makes expert auction representation especially valuable — the only way to discover true market value is competitive bidding.

Common Selling Questions

What’s the seller’s commission?

Our seller’s commission is presented upfront and agreed between you and FORTUNA before any item is listed — it’s locked in when we issue your consignment agreement, not discovered later. The rate is sometimes negotiable for higher-value or in-demand pieces, or for consignors bringing us large collections or full estates. Most of our fee comes from the buyer’s premium, so the seller’s commission stays modest by design.

What is a “reserve price”?

The reserve is the minimum price we will accept as a winning bid for an item. We work with a consignor on each and every item to set an appropriate reserve price, and that price is kept confidential. It is important that reserve prices not be too high, otherwise the item will never sell — and it also cannot be too low, or there is a risk the item may sell for a price that’s too low. This is where our expertise and global market experience come into play. Our experts will guide you through the process and work with you to set reserves as needed.

Do I need to send my items to you?

If you just want a rough idea of what your items are worth, we can usually give you that from photos alone. To actually consign, we need the pieces in hand — we photograph, catalog, and market every item to a global buyer pool. Your items are fully insured from the moment they leave your hands, and while in our care they’re stored in a high-security fully-insured vault.

What happens if my items don’t sell?

We can return them to you, or attempt to sell again in another auction, or perhaps try another channel altogether — such as a Buy Now listing. You’re never charged a fee for unsold lots, unlike at many other auction houses.
