Patek Philippe yellow gold dress watch on a woven gold bracelet

Sell Your Patek Philippe

The most prestigious name in horology deserves the most discerning auction process.

The Legacy of Patek Philippe

Founded in Geneva in 1839, Patek Philippe occupies a singular position in the watch world. The company’s motto — “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation” — reflects a philosophy that has made these timepieces among the most coveted and valuable on earth.

Patek Philippe produces fewer than 65,000 watches per year, and every movement is finished by hand to the exacting standards of the Geneva Seal. The brand’s perpetual calendars, minute repeaters, and grand complications represent the pinnacle of mechanical watchmaking — and their auction results reflect this: Patek Philippe consistently commands the highest prices of any watch brand at auction worldwide.

From the legendary Nautilus (Ref. 5711) that transformed the steel sports watch market, to vintage Calatravas that define dress-watch elegance, to complications like the Annual Calendar (Ref. 5205) and World Time (Ref. 5231) — each reference carries its own collector following and market dynamics that require specialized knowledge to navigate.

Why Sell Your Patek Philippe at Auction?

Patek Philippe is the most closely watched brand in the collector market. Auction brings your timepiece in front of specialists, dealers, and private collectors who understand what makes a reference rare — and pay accordingly. You set the reserve; they bid the ceiling.

Transparent Price Discovery

Competitive bidding surfaces the true market value — often above a dealer’s trade-in or retail offer.

Global Collector Reach

Our bidder base spans 100+ countries, with deep participation from Asia, Europe, and the US — the three markets that move Patek prices.

Net More, Risk Less

No listing fees, no photography, cataloging, marketing, or unsold-lot fees. We handle insured storage, presentation, and the sale itself until your piece finds its buyer.

What Makes Your Patek Philippe Valuable at Auction

Reference & Complication

Certain references — the 5711, 5167, 5070, 3970, and perpetual calendars — command significant premiums. Grand complications (minute repeaters, tourbillons, split-seconds chronographs) are among the most valuable watches at any auction.

Provenance & Papers

A complete set (box, papers, Certificate of Origin, service records) can add 20-40% to a Patek’s value. Extract records from the Patek Philippe archives can further authenticate and enhance provenance.

Dial Condition & Variants

Dial variations — Tiffany-stamped dials, tropical dials, special-order enamel dials — are intensely sought. Even subtle differences in dial printing or lume plots can dramatically affect value among knowledgeable collectors.

FORTUNA’s Patek Philippe Expertise

Selling a Patek Philippe at the right price takes more than an auction slot. Here’s what our specialists do for every consignment.

Authentication & Verification

Every Patek Philippe we accept is hand-examined by our horologists against service records, Extract from the Archives documentation, and caliber/case-number references. Questionable dials, replaced crowns, and post-service alterations are identified and disclosed — buyers know they’re bidding on a piece that has been properly vetted, which sustains confident bidding.

Market Intelligence

Patek values are reference-driven and move quickly. We track recent hammer prices at Phillips, Christie’s, Sotheby’s, and our own results alongside the gray market to position your piece where it will compete — neither priced into the ceiling nor left on the table.

Value Enhancement

The right catalog copy, archival research, studio photography, and placement in the correct sale can move a lot by 20-40%. Our specialists decide whether your Patek belongs in an Important Watches sale, a single-owner event, or a private-sale channel — and handle that call for you.

What Collectors Look For in Your Patek Philippe

Understanding what drives Patek Philippe values helps you appreciate what your timepiece may be worth at auction:

Movement Condition: Has the watch been serviced by Patek Philippe or an authorized service center? Original, unpolished movements with intact finishing command the highest prices.

Case Integrity: Unpolished cases with sharp lugs and original finishing are preferred. Over-polished cases that have lost their factory edges reduce value significantly.

Dial Originality: Original dials with consistent patina, no repainting or relume, are essential. Certain aged dials (tropical, “spider” cracking) actually increase value.

Complete Set: Box, outer box, Certificate of Origin, instruction booklet, and hang tag. Recent references also benefit from having the original purchase receipt.

Discontinued Status: When Patek discontinues a popular reference (as with the 5711/1A in 2021), secondary market values can surge dramatically as supply becomes fixed.

Special Features: Limited editions, special-order dials, retailer signatures (Tiffany & Co., Beyer, Gondolo), and unique complications all drive premium auction results.

Common Selling Questions

What’s the seller’s commission?

Our seller’s commission is presented upfront and agreed between you and FORTUNA before any item is listed — it’s locked in when we issue your consignment agreement, not discovered later. The rate is sometimes negotiable for higher-value or in-demand pieces, or for consignors bringing us large collections or full estates. Most of our fee comes from the buyer’s premium, so the seller’s commission stays modest by design.

What is a “reserve price”?

The reserve is the minimum price we will accept as a winning bid for an item. We work with a consignor on each and every item to set an appropriate reserve price, and that price is kept confidential. It is important that reserve prices not be too high, otherwise the item will never sell — and it also cannot be too low, or there is a risk the item may sell for a price that’s too low. This is where our expertise and global market experience come into play. Our experts will guide you through the process and work with you to set reserves as needed.

Do I need to send my items to you?

If you just want a rough idea of what your items are worth, we can usually give you that from photos alone. To actually consign, we need the pieces in hand — we photograph, catalog, and market every item to a global buyer pool. Your items are fully insured from the moment they leave your hands, and while in our care they’re stored in a high-security fully-insured vault.

What happens if my items don’t sell?

We can return them to you, or attempt to sell again in another auction, or perhaps try another channel altogether — such as a Buy Now listing. You’re never charged a fee for unsold lots, unlike at many other auction houses.
