Sell Designer Handbags

Hermès, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and beyond — luxury handbags have become one of the strongest alternative asset classes at auction.

The Rise of Handbags as Collectible Assets

Over the past two decades, designer handbags have transformed from fashion accessories into legitimate investment-grade collectibles. A 2023 Knight Frank Wealth Report ranked handbags among the top-performing luxury asset categories, with certain Hermès Birkin bags appreciating at rates exceeding traditional financial instruments. This isn’t speculation — it’s a reflection of controlled supply, extraordinary craftsmanship, and global collector demand.

The secondary market is dominated by Hermès (Birkin, Kelly, Constance), Chanel (Classic Flap, Boy, 2.55), and select Louis Vuitton collaborations (Takashi Murakami, Supreme, Virgil Abloh). However, bags from Dior, Bottega Veneta, Goyard, and other houses also achieve strong results when they’re rare, in excellent condition, or from a particularly sought-after collection or collaboration.

What makes the handbag auction market unique is the combination of fashion-driven demand and collector-driven scarcity. A crocodile Birkin 25 in a discontinued color isn’t just a bag — it’s one of perhaps a few dozen examples that will ever exist, and the global community of collectors who want it is large and well-capitalized. Auction is the most effective way to connect that supply with that demand.

What Makes Your Handbag Valuable at Auction

Brand, Model & Size

Hermès Birkin and Kelly bags dominate the top tier, with the Birkin 25 and Kelly 25/28 in the most demand. Chanel Classic Flaps (especially Medium and Jumbo in caviar leather) and select Louis Vuitton limited editions form the next tier. Size, hardware color (gold vs. palladium), and closure type all affect pricing.

Material & Color

Exotic skins (crocodile, ostrich, lizard) command significant premiums over standard leather. Discontinued colors — Rose Shocking, Blue Jean, Raisin, Vert Cypress — develop scarcity value. Special-order (Horseshoe stamp) bags with unique color combinations are among the most valuable.

Condition & Completeness

Condition is paramount in the handbag market. Bags with minimal signs of use, no corner wear, clean interiors, and intact hardware achieve the strongest results. Original packaging (box, dust bag, rain jacket, lock, keys, clochette, receipt) significantly increases value.

FORTUNA’s Handbag Expertise

Selling a handbag at the right price takes more than an auction slot. Here’s what our specialists do for every consignment.

Authentication & Verification

Every handbag is reviewed against reference archives and, where applicable, movement/maker marks, hallmarks, and signatures — giving bidders the confidence that commands top prices.

Market Intelligence

We track the handbag market in real time — recent auction results, collector appetite, reference premiums — so your reserve and estimate are informed by current data, not stale comps.

Value Enhancement

Precise cataloging, professional photography, and targeted marketing to the right buyers are what separate a solid result from a record-setting one.

What Collectors Look For in Your Handbag

The handbag authentication and valuation process examines specific details. Here’s what matters most:

Authentication Markers: Date stamps, craftsman marks (Hermès blind stamps), serial numbers (Chanel hologram stickers and microchips), and hardware engravings are primary authentication points. Professional authentication is essential in a market where counterfeits are sophisticated.

Leather & Hardware Condition: Corner wear, handle darkening, scratches, hardware tarnish, and interior staining are the main condition concerns. Bags rated “excellent” or “pristine” achieve dramatically higher results than those rated “good” or “fair.”

Original Accessories: For Hermès: lock, keys, clochette, dust bag, box, rain jacket, and receipt. For Chanel: authenticity card, dust bag, box, and camellia. Complete sets command 15-30% premiums over bags sold alone.

Production Year: Older vintage bags in excellent condition (especially pre-2000 Hermès with Chevre leather, or vintage Chanel with 24K gold-plated hardware) can be more valuable than newer examples. The year of production affects both material quality and collector interest.

Special Orders & Limited Editions: Hermès Horseshoe (HSS) special orders, Chanel runway pieces, and brand collaboration editions (LV x Supreme, LV x Murakami) carry substantial premiums due to extreme rarity.

Market Timing: Handbag values are influenced by fashion cycles and brand pricing decisions. Chanel’s regular price increases on the Classic Flap have pushed secondary market values steadily upward. Our specialists can advise on optimal timing for consignment.

Common Selling Questions

What’s the seller’s commission?

Our seller’s commission is presented upfront and agreed between you and FORTUNA before any item is listed — it’s locked in when we issue your consignment agreement, not discovered later. The rate is sometimes negotiable for higher-value or in-demand pieces, or for consignors bringing us large collections or full estates. Most of our fee comes from the buyer’s premium, so the seller’s commission stays modest by design.

What is a “reserve price”?

The reserve is the minimum price we will accept as a winning bid for an item. We work with a consignor on each and every item to set an appropriate reserve price, and that price is kept confidential. It is important that reserve prices not be too high, otherwise the item will never sell — and it also cannot be too low, or there is a risk the item may sell for a price that’s too low. This is where our expertise and global market experience come into play. Our experts will guide you through the process and work with you to set reserves as needed.

Do I need to send my items to you?

If you just want a rough idea of what your items are worth, we can usually give you that from photos alone. To actually consign, we need the pieces in hand — we photograph, catalog, and market every item to a global buyer pool. Your items are fully insured from the moment they leave your hands, and while in our care they’re stored in a high-security fully-insured vault.

What happens if my items don’t sell?

We can return them to you, or attempt to sell again in another auction, or perhaps try another channel altogether — such as a Buy Now listing. You’re never charged a fee for unsold lots, unlike at many other auction houses.
