Sell Your Engagement Ring

A new chapter deserves a fresh start — and your diamond deserves to find its full value through competitive auction.

Why Auction Is the Right Choice for Your Ring

Selling an engagement ring is a deeply personal decision, and we approach every consignment with discretion and sensitivity. What we can tell you from years of experience is this: the traditional options — jewelers, pawn shops, online diamond buyers — typically offer 20-40% of what your ring is worth. They’re buying at wholesale to resell at retail, and that margin comes out of your pocket.

Auction changes the equation entirely. Instead of accepting one buyer’s below-market offer, your ring is presented to hundreds of qualified bidders who compete against each other. This competition establishes the true market value of your diamond — and the results consistently exceed what any single buyer would offer. For rings with exceptional stones (2+ carats, D-F color, IF-VVS clarity), the difference between a cash offer and an auction result can be tens of thousands of dollars.

Beyond the financial advantage, auction provides something cash buyers cannot: a documented, transparent sale with a published result. You know exactly what your ring sold for and why, with no ambiguity about whether you received fair value.

Why Sell Your Engagement Ring at Auction?

Auction delivers what private-sale channels can’t: global reach, competitive bidding, and fully transparent pricing — all on your timeline.

Global Collector Reach

Our ring auctions attract serious collectors from across the US, Europe, and Asia — bidders who understand and reward quality.

Net More, Risk Less

No listing fees, no photography, cataloging, marketing, or unsold-lot fees. We handle insured storage, presentation, and the sale itself until your piece finds its buyer.

Specialist Care

Every ring consignment is reviewed by a dedicated specialist — authenticated, researched, cataloged, and positioned for maximum appeal.

What Determines Your Ring’s Auction Value

The Center Stone

Carat weight, color, clarity, and cut quality are the primary value drivers. Stones above key weight thresholds (1ct, 1.5ct, 2ct, 3ct, 5ct) see significant per-carat price jumps. Fancy shapes (cushion, oval, pear, emerald cut) have their own market dynamics that our specialists navigate daily.

Certification

GIA-certified diamonds command the highest confidence and strongest bids at auction. Other reputable labs (AGS, HRD) are also valued. Uncertified diamonds can be submitted for grading before sale — often a worthwhile investment that increases the final result.

Brand & Setting

Rings from Tiffany & Co., Harry Winston, Cartier, Graff, and Van Cleef & Arpels carry brand premiums that can add 20-50% over the value of the stone alone. The setting design, metal quality, and any accent stones also contribute to the total value.

FORTUNA’s Engagement Ring Expertise

Selling a ring at the right price takes more than an auction slot. Here’s what our specialists do for every consignment.

Authentication & Verification

Every ring is reviewed against reference archives and, where applicable, movement/maker marks, hallmarks, and signatures — giving bidders the confidence that commands top prices.

Market Intelligence

We track the ring market in real time — recent auction results, collector appetite, reference premiums — so your reserve and estimate are informed by current data, not stale comps.

Value Enhancement

Precise cataloging, professional photography, and targeted marketing to the right buyers are what separate a solid result from a record-setting one.

What Drives Bidding on Your Diamond

Understanding what the market values helps you evaluate your options with confidence:

Weight & Shape: Round brilliants remain the most liquid shape, but fancy shapes (oval, cushion, emerald) are experiencing unprecedented demand. Stones above 2 carats enter a distinct market tier with significantly higher per-carat values.

Color & Clarity: D-F colorless diamonds command the highest prices, but G-H near-colorless stones offer excellent value and strong auction demand. Internally Flawless to VS1 clarity grades are most sought after. Fancy colored diamonds (yellow, pink, blue) follow entirely different pricing.

Cut Quality: GIA Excellent or Ideal cut grades maximize brilliance and collector appeal. Triple Excellent (cut, polish, symmetry) diamonds receive particular attention from knowledgeable bidders.

Fluorescence: None to Faint fluorescence is preferred for D-F color diamonds. However, Medium Blue fluorescence in G-I colors can actually improve face-up appearance and represent good value for bidders — our specialists price this nuance correctly.

Branded Rings: Tiffany, Harry Winston, Cartier, and Graff rings carry brand premiums that persist in the secondary market. If your ring has its original branded box, certificate, and receipt, these significantly enhance the sale result.

Fancy Colored Diamonds: Natural fancy yellow, pink, blue, and green diamonds have their own passionate collector base. GIA Fancy Intense and Fancy Vivid color grades, especially in pink and blue, achieve extraordinary per-carat prices. Origin reports (e.g., Argyle mine for pinks) add further premium.

Common Selling Questions

What’s the seller’s commission?

Our seller’s commission is presented upfront and agreed between you and FORTUNA before any item is listed — it’s locked in when we issue your consignment agreement, not discovered later. The rate is sometimes negotiable for higher-value or in-demand pieces, or for consignors bringing us large collections or full estates. Most of our fee comes from the buyer’s premium, so the seller’s commission stays modest by design.

What is a “reserve price”?

The reserve is the minimum price we will accept as a winning bid for an item. We work with a consignor on each and every item to set an appropriate reserve price, and that price is kept confidential. It is important that reserve prices not be too high, otherwise the item will never sell — and it also cannot be too low, or there is a risk the item may sell for a price that’s too low. This is where our expertise and global market experience come into play. Our experts will guide you through the process and work with you to set reserves as needed.

Do I need to send my items to you?

If you just want a rough idea of what your items are worth, we can usually give you that from photos alone. To actually consign, we need the pieces in hand — we photograph, catalog, and market every item to a global buyer pool. Your items are fully insured from the moment they leave your hands, and while in our care they’re stored in a high-security fully-insured vault.

What happens if my items don’t sell?

We can return them to you, or attempt to sell again in another auction, or perhaps try another channel altogether — such as a Buy Now listing. You’re never charged a fee for unsold lots, unlike at many other auction houses.
