Bulgari Serpenti bracelet watch in gold set with diamonds

Sell Your Bulgari

Bold Italian design, extraordinary colored gemstones — Bulgari’s distinctive style commands strong auction demand worldwide.

The Roman Jeweler

Sotirios Voulgaris founded his jewelry house in Rome in 1884, and from the beginning, Bulgari — stylized BVLGARI on the house’s own signage, after the classical Latin alphabet — charted a course distinct from the French maisons that dominated the industry. Where Cartier and Van Cleef pursued delicacy and platinum settings, Bulgari embraced bold volumes, yellow gold, and vibrant colored gemstones — an aesthetic rooted in the grandeur of classical Rome and the colors of the Italian landscape.

By the 1960s and 70s, Bulgari had become the jeweler of choice for international celebrities and Roman aristocracy. Elizabeth Taylor’s legendary Bulgari collection (gifted largely by Richard Burton during the filming of Cleopatra) cemented the house’s reputation for extraordinary colored stones. The Serpenti collection, inspired by ancient Roman serpent motifs, and the Tubogas technique of flexible gas-pipe goldwork became signature elements that remain highly collectible today.

What distinguishes Bulgari at auction is the house’s philosophy of letting gemstones speak for themselves. Bulgari settings are designed to maximize the visual impact of exceptional colored stones — cabochon-cut emeralds, sapphires, and rubies set in bold, architectural gold mountings that feel unmistakably Italian. This design confidence means Bulgari pieces stand out in any auction catalog and attract both jewelry collectors and colored-stone enthusiasts.

What Makes Your Bulgari Valuable at Auction

Colored Gemstones

Bulgari is renowned for sourcing extraordinary colored stones. Pieces featuring important emeralds (especially Colombian), sapphires (Kashmir or Burmese), and rubies (Burmese pigeon’s blood) achieve premium results. The combination of a prestigious Bulgari setting with an exceptional stone creates multiplicative value.

Iconic Collections

The Serpenti, Tubogas, Monete (ancient coin jewelry), Parentesi, and B.zero1 collections each have dedicated followings. Vintage examples from the 1960s-1980s — the peak of Bulgari’s bold Italian aesthetic — are particularly sought after by collectors.

Provenance & Period

Bulgari pieces with documented provenance, especially from notable collections or with celebrity association, achieve significant premiums. The house’s Via Condotti flagship era (1960s-80s) represents the golden age most prized by collectors.

What Collectors Look For in Your Bulgari

The Bulgari secondary market rewards bold design and exceptional stones. Here’s what drives value:

Gemstone Certification: For colored stone pieces, independent lab reports (GRS, SSEF, Gübelin) documenting origin and treatment status are essential. A Bulgari emerald necklace with a “Colombian, no oil” certification achieves dramatically higher results.

Signature Techniques: Tubogas goldwork, cabochon settings, the Serpenti’s articulated scales, and the Monete collection’s ancient coins — these distinctive techniques are what collectors seek and what differentiates authentic Bulgari from imitators.

Italian Hallmarks: Bulgari’s Italian maker’s marks, gold purity stamps, and serial numbers follow specific patterns by era. Correct identification helps date pieces and confirm authenticity.

Condition of Goldwork: Bulgari’s bold gold settings are part of the design statement. Pieces with well-preserved, unrepaired goldwork — especially Tubogas bracelets with smooth, unbent tubes — command premium prices.

Vintage vs. Contemporary: Pre-LVMH vintage Bulgari (before 2011) is generally more valued by collectors, particularly pieces from the 1960s-80s Via Condotti era. However, contemporary high jewelry pieces with exceptional stones transcend this distinction.

Complete Sets: Bulgari suites (matching necklace, bracelet, earrings, ring) are rare and highly valued. Even partial suites with documented provenance showing they were originally purchased together achieve premiums over individual pieces.

Common Selling Questions

What’s the seller’s commission?

Our seller’s commission is presented upfront and agreed between you and FORTUNA before any item is listed — it’s locked in when we issue your consignment agreement, not discovered later. The rate is sometimes negotiable for higher-value or in-demand pieces, or for consignors bringing us large collections or full estates. Most of our fee comes from the buyer’s premium, so the seller’s commission stays modest by design.

What is a “reserve price”?

The reserve is the minimum price we will accept as a winning bid for an item. We work with a consignor on each and every item to set an appropriate reserve price, and that price is kept confidential. It is important that reserve prices not be too high, otherwise the item will never sell — and it also cannot be too low, or there is a risk the item may sell for a price that’s too low. This is where our expertise and global market experience come into play. Our experts will guide you through the process and work with you to set reserves as needed.

Do I need to send my items to you?

If you just want a rough idea of what your items are worth, we can usually give you that from photos alone. To actually consign, we need the pieces in hand — we photograph, catalog, and market every item to a global buyer pool. Your items are fully insured from the moment they leave your hands, and while in our care they’re stored in a high-security fully-insured vault.

What happens if my items don’t sell?

We can return them to you, or attempt to sell again in another auction, or perhaps try another channel altogether — such as a Buy Now listing. You’re never charged a fee for unsold lots, unlike at many other auction houses.
