A hymn to the classical mythology of the sea and sky, Balade Oceane the Ocean Promenade is a richly layered maritime and mythological composition that places Hermes's draftsmanship in the tradition of Baroque ceiling painting and navigational cartography simultaneously. The design evokes the golden age of sail and the Greco-Roman mythological imagination with equal fluency, producing a scarf that is both decorative tour de force and learned allusion.

The composition is organized around a central oval field on a cream-ivory ground, where a sea goddess rides a gilded chariot drawn by two great swans across an aqueous expanse, her drapery billowing in blue. Radiating outward from this axis, four diagonal struts framed by gilded grotesque carvings sea horses, sea dragons, and Baroque scrollwork divide the field into quadrants, each populated with dolphins, tall sailing ships, and small putti.
